Al Mahmud

Al Mahmud is considered as one of the best Bengali poets of modern time was born in 1936, in Kasba, Brahamanbaria.His real name is Mir Abdus Sukur Al Mahmud. Mahmud started his career as a journalist. In 1975, Mahmud joined Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as Assistant Director of Research and Publication. In 1993, he retired from the academy as Director. Pastoral life, rivers, villages, shoals, love and the human biophysical urges are dominant themes in his poetry. He provoked the core of poetic appeal through wielding common/ colloquial words from local dialects and created a new trend. Al Mahmud’s name will forever shine in the Bengali literature for his masterpiece Shonali Kabin. This is a landmark in Bengali poetry. Later books, such as Kaler Kalosh , Sonali Kabin , and Mayabi Porda Dule Otho, established his position as one of the most prominent poets of the country.In addition to writing poetry, Al Mahmud has written short stories, novels and essays, among which ‘Pankourir Rakta’ and Upamohadesh are considered to be the most famous ones. Al Mahmud’s poetic genius has been evaluated, recognised and honoured with many awards like Bangla Academy Award, Ekushey Padak, Philips Literary Award, Alakta Literary Award, Sufi Motaher Hossain Literary Gold Medal and many more.
