Sunil Gangopadhyay was born in Faridpur in 7 September 1934 what is now in Bangladesh. His Father Kalipada Gangopadhyay was a school teacher and Mother Mira Gangopadhyay was a house wife.He got his Master’s degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta in 1954. He married Swati Bandopadhyay on February 1967.
Sunil Gangopadhyay is a prolific writer who has excelled in different genres but declares poetry to be his “first love”. He is the author of well over 200 books. His pen-names are: Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay.
Sunil Gangopadhyay was the founder editor of Krittibaas poetry magazine. It is considered that Krittibaas is an experimenting platform for a new generation of poets with many new forms in poetic themes, rhythms, and words. He is the poet of extremely popular Nikhilesh and Neera series of poems .
Sunil Gangopadhyay ‘s two novel Pratidwandi and Aranyer Din-Raatri filmed by Satyajit Ray. Sei Somoy , Pratham Alo, Purbo-Paschim are his popular historical fiction. For Sei Somoy he received the Indian Sahitya Akademi award in 1985. He is also the winner of the Bankim Puraskar (1982), and the Ananda Puraskar (twice, in 1972 and 1989). In 2002, he became the Sheriff of Kolkata. After serving five years as the Vice President, he was elected the President of the Sahitya Akademi on February 20, 2008.
