The term “Upanishad” literally means the inner or mystic teaching. The Upanishads are a collection of Vedic texts which contain the earliest emergence of some of the central religious concepts of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It form the core of Indian philosophy.They are also known as Vedanta (“the end of the Veda”). Widely featured in philosophy courses, the Upanishads have puzzled and inspired wisdom seekers from Yeats to Schopenhauer.Nearly 200 Upanishads found. Among them thirteen known Upanishads were composed from the middle of the 5th century through the 2nd century bce. They are Brihadaranyaka, Chandogya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Kaushitaki, Kena, Katha, Isa, Svetasvatara, Mundaka, Prasna, Mandukya, and Maitri. The first five of these were composed in prose interspersed with verse, the middle five in verse and the last three in prose.
